Johann Jacob Groos: Texas Land Commissioner

Johann Jacob Groos, born in Offenbach, Germany, on March 6, 1822, became a significant figure in Texas history. He was a professional surveyor in his native Germany before immigrating to Texas in 1845. Groos settled in New Braunfels, where he helped open the area to settlement. He served as a Comal County official from 1849 to 1865, including roles as deputy surveyor and county clerk. In 1874, Groos was elected Texas Land Commissioner, taking office in January of that year. The General Land Office, established in 1836, was responsible for overseeing public lands, managing records, and issuing land titles. Groos served in this important state role until his death on June 15, 1878. He is buried in Austin, Travis County, where a historical marker was erected in 1974 by the Texas Historical Commission to commemorate his contributions. This marker recognizes his service as a Texas Land Commissioner.
