The King-Tears Mortuary in Austin, Travis County, Texas, is recognized by a historical marker erected in 2002 by the Texas Historical Commission. Its story began in October 1901, when William M. Tears opened Tears Funeral Home at 614 East 6th Street. This business served African Americans in Austin. After William M. Tears, Sr.'s death in 1923, his son, William M. Tears, Jr., took over. The Tears Funeral Home relocated to its current 12th Street address in 1934. In 1933, Mr. and Mrs. Charles B. King opened King and Company, later King Funeral Home, at 1107 East 6th Street. These two East Austin establishments merged in 1955, creating the King-Tears Funeral Home. The mortuary has continued to operate at this location, offering services and contributing to the community. It remains an important part of Austin's heritage.
