historical marker

The Kopperl House, located in Austin, Travis County, is recognized by a historical marker erected in 1989 by the Texas Historical Commission. This late Victorian-era cottage was completed in 1896, built at a cost of $4,200. It stands as a notable example of the Eastlake architectural style, characterized by its intricate geometric woodwork, spindlework, and a distinctive pyramidal roof with a crowned deck. Loula Dale Kopperl, a noted sportswoman, purchased the house the year it was built. She resided here with her husband, Morris Allen Kopperl. Morris was the nephew of Moritz Kopperl, a prominent Galveston banker and railroad tycoon for whom the Texas town of Kopperl is named. Loula Kopperl continued to occupy the home until her death in 1919. The Kopperl House serves as an emblem of Texas's Victorian-era architecture and reflects Austin's urban development during the late 19th century. It highlights the prominent families who shaped the city's neighborhoods.
