Lamar Boulevard Bridge

historic place

The Lamar Boulevard Bridge in Austin, Texas, is a historic place over Lady Bird Lake. Construction began on March 27, 1941, and it opened to traffic on July 15, 1942. This Art Deco-style bridge features six open-spandrel concrete arches, designed by the Texas Highway Department. It was the second permanent bridge to cross Austin's Colorado River. Its construction during World War II was considered essential for defense. In 1960, the river became Town Lake, now Lady Bird Lake. Designated an Austin Landmark in 1993 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1994, it remains a notable transportation link in Travis County.
