Las Ventanas, Austin, Texas
historical marker
In Austin, Travis County, stands the historic home known as Las Ventanas. This notable building, located at 602 Harthan Street, was constructed between 1875 and 1876. It was designed and built for A. J. Jernigan, who served as the Travis County Treasurer for multiple terms between 1873 and 1896. The master builder Abner Cook is credited with its design and construction. Las Ventanas, meaning “the windows” in Spanish, is named for its distinctive pedimented windows and doors, a style unique in this area, reminiscent of Georgian homes near Washington, D.C. The house was built with handmade, sun-dried brick, reflecting a transitional architectural style between Greek Revival and the Victorian period. In 1967, the State Historical Survey Committee erected a historical marker here, designating Las Ventanas as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. The property was later added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. Las Ventanas remains a significant example of 19th-century residential architecture in Austin.
