Limerick--Frazier House
historic place
The Limerick-Frazier House, a historic place in Austin, Travis County, was constructed in 1876. Immigrant stonemason Joseph Limerick built the house, though he and his wife did not reside there. In 1905, Professor John W. Frazier purchased the property. Professor Frazier was an influential educator at Samuel Huston College, now Huston-Tillotson College. During the 1930s and into the early 1960s, Professor Frazier and his wife, Laura Allman Frazier, operated the house as lodging. This provided essential accommodation for African American students and travelers during the Jim Crow era, when many were excluded from white-owned hotels in Austin. The house was notably listed in the Negro Motorist Green Book. The City of Austin designated it a local landmark in 1978, and it was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. This site is historically significant for its role in supporting the African American community and reflecting demographic changes in East Austin.
