In Austin, Travis County, Texas, a historical marker addresses "Lynching in America / Lynching in Travis County." It was erected in 2017 by the Equal Justice Initiative and the Travis Community Remembrance Project. This marker commemorates a triple lynching that occurred in Travis County on August 14, 1894. A white mob seized a Black woman and two Black men from a jail about thirty miles from Austin. The woman, a nurse, was accused of a child's death without evidence or investigation. The two Black men were also arrested. The mob abducted them, tied them to stakes in a field, and shot them to death. No one was held accountable for these killings. The victims' names were not recorded and are lost to history. This marker acknowledges racial terror lynching, a practice that devastated African American communities in Texas for decades.
