McCallum, Arthur N. and Jane Y., House
historic place
The Arthur N. and Jane Y. McCallum House, located in Austin, Travis County, Texas, was constructed in 1908. This historic place served as the home for Arthur N. and Jane Y. McCallum and their five children. Arthur N. McCallum was the superintendent of the Austin public school system for 39 years, from 1903 to 1942. Jane Y. McCallum was a prominent leader in the Texas woman suffrage movement of the early 20th century. She served as president of the Austin Woman Suffrage Association in 1915 and was instrumental in statewide campaigns for suffrage. Jane McCallum was also appointed Texas Secretary of State by Governor Dan Moody in 1927 and reappointed by Governor Ross Sterling in 1931. During her term, she discovered and preserved an original signed copy of the Texas Declaration of Independence. A historical marker was erected at the site in 1990 by the Texas Historical Commission. The house is significant for its association with the McCallums' contributions to education and government at both state and local levels.
