McGown, Floyd, House

historic place

The Floyd McGown House in Austin, Texas, was constructed in 1888. Its original owner was Floyd McGown, a partner in the Congress Avenue law firm of West & McGown. McGown lived in the house until approximately 1900, when he moved to San Antonio. This two-story, wood-frame Victorian structure features an asymmetrical plan and a central tower that dominates its front facade. It is recognized as one of the earliest and most architecturally impressive residences within the Canterbury Square subdivision. After McGown's ownership, the house passed through several hands before one family retained it for over 50 years after 1914. The Floyd McGown House was officially entered into the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. Its distinctive architecture marks its historical importance in Austin.
