Millett Opera House

historic place

The Millett Opera House, a historic place in Austin, Travis County, was erected in 1878. Lumber dealer Captain Charles F. Millett built it, designed by architect Frederick E. Ruffini. Upon completion, it was the second largest opera house in Texas, featuring 800 movable seats. It served as a cultural center for Austin, hosting operas, dramatic performances, and even legislative sessions. Notable figures like Edwin Booth and William Jennings Bryan appeared here. The building's uses evolved, including a period as a skating rink before being acquired by the Austin Public Free Schools. Designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1965, the Millett Opera House reflects Austin's historical social and civic life.
