Moreland, Charles B., House
historic place
The Charles B. Moreland House, a historic place in Austin, Travis County, was constructed in 1898. This two-story, late Victorian wood-frame structure features a prominent two-story gallery. The house is notable for its profusion of textures and ornate carpentry details, including fish-scale shingles in the gable ends and elaborate barge trim. Contractor C. W. Moore built the residence, following plans and specifications prepared by Austin architect J. J. Byrdson. The original owner, Charles B. Moreland, was a wholesale and retail dealer of wallpaper, paints, and painters' supplies. He had established a firm on Congress Avenue with a partner in 1888. Appropriately, Moreland personally completed the painting and papering of his new home. The Charles B. Moreland House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 17, 1985. It remains one of the most ornate and architecturally intact Victorian residences in East Austin.
