Oakwood Cemetery is a historic place located in Austin, Travis County, Texas. It was established in 1839, originally known as the City Cemetery. The cemetery was later renamed Oakwood in 1907 by city ordinance. Spanning over 40 acres, it is Austin's oldest municipal burial ground. The earliest currently-standing monument commemorates two victims of a Comanche attack who perished in 1842. The site holds over 23,000 burials, reflecting Austin's diverse population. These include pioneers, city builders, and state officials. Oakwood Cemetery also contains sections historically dedicated to the city's Black, Latino, and Jewish populations. A historical marker was erected here in 1972 by the Texas Historical Commission. The cemetery became a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in the same year and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. It remains a significant site for understanding Austin's history.
