Page--Gilbert House, Austin, Texas

historic place

The Page-Gilbert House is a historic place located in Austin, Texas. It was constructed in 1893 by Christopher H. Page. Page was a British stonemason who had previously worked on the construction of the Texas State Capitol between 1887 and 1888. During that project, he served as a subcontractor, overseeing laborers involved in stone installation. The Page-Gilbert House exhibits Victorian and Queen Anne architectural styles. It features a distinctive pyramidal roof shape, decorative porches, and ornamental woodwork. At the time of its construction, it was one of only two brick residences in the Hyde Park subdivision, reflecting requirements for significant property improvements there. The City of Austin zoned the house as a historic landmark in 1978. It was later added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. This site is historically significant as the only known remaining residence in Austin occupied by Christopher H. Page, demonstrating how craftsmanship from major public works influenced private residential construction.
