Peter and Clotilde Shipe Mansbendel House
historic place
The Peter and Clotilde Shipe Mansbendel House, located in Austin, Texas, is a historic place. In 1925, renowned Swiss woodcarver Peter Mansbendel transformed an existing structure into this Tudor Revival style house. The design features an asymmetrical plan, steeply pitched gable roofs, and stucco walls with decorative half-timbering, referencing Mansbendel's native homeland. Peter Mansbendel was a master carver whose commissions included major architectural carvings, portraits, objects, and furniture for private residences and public institutions across Texas. He married Clotilde Shipe, daughter of Hyde Park developer Monroe M. Shipe, after they met in New York. Mansbendel moved to Austin in 1911. The house was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1970. A historical marker was erected at the site in 2013. The house was also added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 16, 1990. This house stands as an example of Peter Mansbendel's craftsmanship and the Tudor Revival architectural style in Austin.
