Philquist-Wood House
historical marker
The Philquist-Wood House, located in Austin, Travis County, received a Texas Historical Commission marker in 2003. This home was built in 1912, commissioned by Sven Axel Philquist, a Sweden native who served as a local district clerk and later as a clerk of the Texas Supreme Court. Swedish builder F. Oscar Blomquist constructed the residence. In 1943, grocer Sam Wood purchased the house, and it remained in the Wood family for more than 50 years. The Philquist-Wood House exhibits its original detailing as a transitional hybrid, showing clear influences of the Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, and Craftsman architectural styles. Its interior features an inglenook, while the exterior displays distinctive elements such as paired box columns, tripartite window groupings, dormers, and gables. This site is historically significant for its distinctive architecture and its connection to these prominent early Austin residents.
