historical marker

This historical marker in Austin, Travis County, Texas, is titled "Remembering Courage... Dedication... Sacrifice...". It honors University of Texas Navy and Marine Corps Officers who served in World War II. The University of Texas played a role in the nation's service during World War II, which began for the United States in December 1941. The Naval Reserve Officers' Training Corps, or NROTC, program was established at the university in 1940. Its purpose was to train college students to become commissioned officers for the Naval Reserve or Marine Corps Reserve. By 1943, this NROTC unit was absorbed into the Navy's V-12 program, which brought officer candidates to the campus. The V-12 program was designed to recruit and prepare officers for the Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard. The campus focused on the war effort, and the academic year was compressed to allow students to graduate sooner. This marker commemorates the service and commitment of these individuals during a period of global conflict.
