Reuter, Louis and Mathilde, House
historic place
This is the Louis and Mathilde Reuter House in Austin, Travis County. Built in 1934, it was the home of Louis and Mathilde Reuter. Louis Reuter moved to Austin in 1918 and opened the city's first self-service grocery store, an innovation for its time. The house itself is a distinctive limestone residence, reflecting the Spanish Colonial Revival style. It features cast-stone details and a red barrel-tile roof. The Reuters occupied the house in December 1934. In 1986, the Texas Historical Commission erected a marker here, designating it a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. This house showcases a significant architectural style and an important aspect of Austin's commercial history.
