Robbins, Alice H., House

historic place

The Alice H. Robbins House, found at 4311 Avenue A in Austin, Texas, has a history rooted in the mid-1920s. The lot was acquired by Alice H. Robbins in February 1925 for fifty dollars. Robbins had previously managed a sanatorium in the city. One month after purchasing the land, she contracted R.W. Herndon, a local Austinite and independent contractor, to build the house for seven hundred sixty-seven dollars and seventy-six cents. Herndon later became a mill superintendent and managed local lumber companies. Completed in 1925, the house showcases a distinctive combination of the vernacular shotgun form and Bungalow architectural details. It features Bungalow-style elements in its eaves, porch, foundation, and fenestration. The Alice H. Robbins House maintains many of its original characteristics, making it a notable example of this architectural blend in the Hyde Park area. It was recognized for its local architectural significance and listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.
