Rosewood Courts Historic District
historic place
Rosewood Courts Historic District in Austin, Travis County, was established in 1939. This site is significant as the first public housing project in the United States built for African Americans. Its development was part of the New Deal, championed by then-Congressman Lyndon Baines Johnson. Rosewood Courts was constructed during an era of segregation. The complex sits on the original Emancipation Park site, an important location for Juneteenth celebrations. Designed by Page & Southerland Architects, it provided housing for low-income residents. The district was later desegregated in 1968. Rosewood Courts marks a key chapter in American public housing and civil rights history.
