Sampson, George W., House

historic place

The George W. Sampson House is a historic place in Austin, Travis County. George W. Sampson, a former Confederate Army Captain and a leading Austin merchant, built this house. Sampson married Mary Goodwin Hall in 1872. Their wedding was the first held in the Governor's Mansion. Construction of this native limestone house began in 1875 and was completed around 1877. It included a cistern for rainwater, possibly supporting Austin's first complete indoor plumbing system. A gallery with Corinthian columns was added in the 1920s. The George W. Sampson House received its historical marker in 1982, when it was also designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. This site is significant for its association with an early Austin merchant and its architectural features.
