Scholz Garten, located in Austin, Travis County, Texas, is a historical landmark. German immigrant August Scholz opened this public bar and cafe in 1866. He had purchased the property in 1862. It quickly became a central gathering place for German immigrant culture in Austin. Scholz Garten holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously operating tavern in Texas. The Austin Saengerrunde, a German singing club, purchased the property in 1908. They subsequently built a six-lane bowling alley, which is recognized as one of the oldest continuously operating bowling centers in the United States. Throughout its long history, Scholz Garten has served as a notable gathering spot for politicians, legislators, and University of Texas fans. The Texas Legislature officially honored the establishment in 1966. A historical marker was erected here in 1967 by the Texas Historical Commission, recognizing its enduring significance. Scholz Garten continues to be an important part of Austin's historical and cultural landscape.
