historical marker

The Scottish Rite Temple, located in Austin, Travis County, Texas, is recognized by a historical marker. This marker was erected in 1967 by the State Historical Survey Committee. The building at 18th and Lavaca Street began its life as Turner Hall. It was constructed between 1871 and 1872 by the Austin Turn Verein, a German social group. Costing twenty-eight thousand dollars, Turner Hall served as Austin's only opera house, hosting various cultural performances, gymnastic exhibitions, and social events. Between 1910 and 1912, the Freemasons acquired the hall, with the Ben Hur Temple Holding Association purchasing the property. They then undertook a seventy-thousand-dollar renovation, transforming the modest stone structure. In 1915, the building was dedicated as the Scottish Rite Temple, becoming a significant meeting place for the Masons. Today, it continues its dual role as both a Masonic center and a public performance venue, known as the Austin Scottish Rite Theater. This site reflects a long history of community gathering and cultural activity in Austin.
