The September 11, 2001 Memorial is a historical marker located in Austin, Travis County, Texas. You can find it within the Texas State Cemetery. The State of Texas erected this memorial in 2003. Governor Rick Perry commissioned the memorial in 2002, marking the first anniversary of the September 11 attacks. It was then unveiled on the second anniversary of the attacks in 2003. The design was created by O'Connell, Robertson and Associates of Austin. This monument commemorates Texans who died during the September 11 terrorist attacks and during Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. A significant element of the memorial is the inclusion of two steel columns. These columns were salvaged from the World Trade Center site, also known as Ground Zero, and were not altered. Private funds covered the cost of the memorial. This site stands as a factual record of these events and the individuals it honors.
