Shotgun at 1206 Canterbury Street
historic place
At 1206 Canterbury Street in Austin, Travis County, stands an early twentieth-century shotgun house. This historic place, constructed around 1903 or 1904, is a notable example of its architectural type. The house features a board-and-batten wood-frame structure with a hipped roof and a simple front porch. Its length is oriented at right angles to the street. The front porch covers a central door, surmounted by a transom, with turned columns supporting a bracketed cornice. While built as rental property and owned by various speculators, the original builder demonstrated unusual care in its decorative wood details and general carpentry. The Shotgun at 1206 Canterbury Street is recognized as one of the best surviving examples of this architectural style in East Austin, a type that has largely disappeared from the area. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
