Simpson Memorial Methodist Church
historic place
Simpson Memorial Methodist Church, located in Austin, Travis County, has a history rooted in the late 19th century. The congregation began as an early Sunday school class. In December 1880, the group formally organized as the Simpson Mission Methodist Episcopal Church. It was named to honor Bishop Matthew Simpson, a pioneer Methodist leader. Worship services were initially held in a community schoolhouse. A frame sanctuary was constructed in May 1881 at the corner of Concho and Gregory Streets. The congregation moved to its current site in 1922. The historic church building standing today was constructed in 1952 in a Colonial Revival architectural style. Since 1970, the fellowship has been known as Simpson United Methodist Church. This church has played a significant role in the development of Austin's Black community for over a century. The Texas Historical Commission erected an official historical marker here in 1982. The site reflects a long-standing community presence in Austin.
