Site of Old Anderson High School / Kealing Jr. High School
historical marker
This historical marker in Austin, Travis County, Texas, commemorates the site of Old Anderson High School and Kealing Junior High School. Erected in 1986, it marks a location central to African American education. Old Anderson High School, initially Robertson Hill School, moved to 1607 Pennsylvania Avenue in 1913. It served Austin's African American high school students until its relocation in 1953. The school was renamed L.C. Anderson High School in 1938. Kealing Junior High School opened on this site in 1930, becoming Austin's first junior high for African American students. Named for educator Hightower Theodore Kealing, it expanded into the former Anderson building in 1954. Both schools closed in 1971 due to desegregation. The original Kealing building was razed in 1983, and the old Anderson building burned in 1984. A new Kealing Junior High opened on this site in 1986. This location represents a significant chapter in Austin's educational and civil rights history.
