Site of Tenth Street Methodist Church
historical marker
This historical marker in Austin, Travis County, designates the site of the Tenth Street Methodist Church. Austin Methodists first organized in 1840. They began worshipping at Congress and 4th Street in 1847. The congregation purchased this specific site at Brazos and 10th Street in 1853. A new brick church building was then constructed here in 1853, under the Reverend John W. Phillips. In 1883, a larger sanctuary was built under the Reverend A.E. Goodwyn. The congregation was known as both "Central Church" and "Tenth Street Church." In 1909, it officially became the First Methodist Church. Legislators and other government officials worshipped at this location. The congregation moved to a new building at Lavaca and 12th Street in 1923. The State Historical Survey Committee erected this marker in 1979. The site is historically significant as an early and prominent Methodist church in Austin.
