Site of Texas Wesleyan College

historical marker

In Austin, Travis County, a historical marker designates the site of the former Texas Wesleyan College. This institution was established by Swedish Methodists and began operations on January 9, 1912, with fourteen students. The college was situated in north Austin, on land now occupied by the University of Texas Law School Building. The school experienced growth during the 1920s. However, by the 1930s, interest in ethnic colleges decreased. On May 26, 1931, the college's board of trustees agreed to sell the school grounds to the University of Texas. In May 1935, the institution was renamed Texas Wesleyan Academy. Academic courses ceased in June 1936, ending the campus's academic functions. A scholarship and loan fund for descendants of Swedes continued the educational mission until 1976. The Texas Historical Commission erected this marker in 1989, recognizing the location of this early Austin educational institution. The site represents a part of Austin's educational history from the early 20th century.
