Smith--Marcuse--Lowry House
historic place
The Smith--Marcuse--Lowry House, located at 3913 Avenue C in Austin, Texas, is a historic place in Travis County. Built in 1894 by contractor John Geggie, this two-story frame dwelling exemplifies the Queen Anne architectural style. It was among the first residences constructed in the Hyde Park subdivision, reflecting a strategy to attract investors with distinct homes. George Smith purchased the lot in 1894 and initiated the house's construction. In 1905, Louis Marcuse acquired the property. Marcuse, who immigrated from Prussia in 1867, settled in Austin in 1873 and served on the City Board of Equalization while living here. After his death in 1920, his widow, Emma, continued to reside in the home. Their daughter, Alwine, married realtor Nelson R. Lowry, and the couple also lived in the house. Alwine and her son remained in the home until 1968. The Smith--Marcuse--Lowry House was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 16, 1990. Its preservation offers insight into early Hyde Park development and late 19th-century residential architecture in Austin.
