Snead-Rieck House
historical marker
The Snead-Rieck House, located in Austin, Travis County, Texas, is marked by a historical marker erected in 2018 by the Texas Historical Commission. This Tudor Revival-style house was constructed in August 1934 by Edwin Brazelton Snead, a notable figure in Austin's construction and development. Snead creatively repurposed materials, using light yellow-buff bricks and other components from the demolition of the Old Main building on the University of Texas campus. Architecturally, the house is characterized by its steeply-pitched roofs, half-timbered gables with stucco accents, a prominent high chimney, and dormered second-story windows. In 1939, Meta Paterson Rieck acquired the property. The Rieck family, recognized as prominent ranchers from Kimble County, lived in the home for a significant period. The Snead-Rieck House serves as an example of the creative vernacular architecture employed by Texans during the Great Depression.
