St. Edward's University Main Building and Holy Cross Dormitory

historic place

The St. Edward's University Main Building and Holy Cross Dormitory are located in Austin, Travis County. The institution was founded in 1873 by the Congregation of Holy Cross. The first Main Building was erected in 1888. Architect Nicholas J. Clayton designed this Gothic Revival structure. On April 9, 1903, a fire destroyed the Main Building. It was rebuilt that same year, with Nicholas J. Clayton again as the architect. Holy Cross Hall was also constructed in 1903, adjacent to the Main Building, sharing a similar Gothic Revival design. The Main Building has served administrative functions. Holy Cross Hall has been used as a dormitory, and for classrooms and offices. In 1921, college-level courses were added. The institution was rechartered as a university in 1925. During World War II, the site housed an academy and flying school. Women were admitted in 1966. This site was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1972. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. These buildings mark significant periods in St. Edward's University's history and its architectural presence in Austin.
