State Cemetery of Texas
historic place
The State Cemetery of Texas in Austin originated in 1851 with the burial of General Edward Burleson, a Texas Revolution hero. The state purchased the land in 1854. During the 1860s, it became a burial site for officers of the Confederate Army of Texas. After 1930, state official Louis W. Kemp led efforts to reinter over 100 prominent Texans here. The cemetery now holds the remains of figures like Stephen F. Austin, the "Father of Texas," and multiple state governors. Statuary includes a marble figure of Albert Sidney Johnston by Elisabet Ney. The historical marker for this site was erected in 1968. This cemetery serves as a historical record of Texas leadership and military figures.
