The Stuart Female Seminary, located in Austin, Travis County, Texas, is commemorated by a historical marker erected in 1973. This institution formally opened in January 1876. It was founded by Rebecca K. Stuart Red and her husband, Dr. George Clark Red. They had previously taught at the Live Oak Female Seminary. The seminary was situated at the northwest corner of Ninth and Navasota streets. It operated in a three-story stone building constructed in 1875. Rebecca Red served as principal, overseeing a curriculum that offered Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees, including classical and scientific studies. The school closed in 1899. The property was then deeded to the Presbyterian Synod of Texas, becoming the initial site for the Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in 1902. This location highlights an early effort in women's education and the subsequent establishment of theological training in Austin.
