Swante Palm in Austin, Texas

Swante Palm was born on January 31, 1815, in Basthult, Smaland, Sweden. He arrived in Texas in 1844, influenced by his nephew, Swen Magnus Swenson. Palm first settled in La Grange, where he served as postmaster and worked in Swenson's general store. Both men later moved to Austin in 1850. In 1854, Palm married Agnes Christine Alm. Their son, Swante Sture, was born in 1855 but died in infancy. Swante Palm held various public offices in Austin, including justice of the peace, alderman, and postmaster. From 1866 until his death, he served as vice consul for Sweden and Norway, actively encouraging Swedish immigration to Texas. He also helped organize the Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Church in Austin. In 1884, King Oscar II of Sweden knighted Palm with the Order of Vasa for his diplomatic and scholarly work. A devoted book collector, Palm donated over 10,000 books to the University of Texas in 1897, significantly increasing its library holdings. Swante Palm died on June 22, 1899. This historical marker, erected in 1990 in Travis County, commemorates his significant contributions to Austin and Texas.
