Swedish Hill, Austin, Texas

historical marker

Swedish Hill is a historical marker located in Austin, Travis County, Texas. The area received its name because a community of Swedish immigrant families settled here, beginning in the 1870s. Early residents like S. A. Lundell and Carl John Swahn established homes, and about sixty-seven Swedish immigrant families eventually lived in this vicinity. The community developed with institutions such as the first Swedish Methodist church in Texas, built within Swede Hill. Urban development, including Interstate Highway 35, later impacted the neighborhood's size. In 1986, the remaining portion of Swedish Hill was designated a National Register historic district. The Texas Historical Commission erected this marker in 1990. This site preserves the history of a significant immigrant community in Austin.
