Texas Confederate Woman's Home Context

historical marker

In Austin, Travis County, a historical marker titled 'Texas Confederate Woman's Home Context' was erected in 2020. This marker highlights the history of a site that once housed the Texas Confederate Woman's Home. The home opened in 1908, established by the United Daughters of the Confederacy, to care for indigent wives and widows of Confederate veterans, and women over 60 who had participated in the Confederate war effort and lacked financial support. Over its 55 years of operation, until 1963, the home provided for more than 3,400 women. The United Daughters of the Confederacy transferred the home to the State of Texas in 1911 due to maintenance costs. The state legislature established a board to operate the home in 1920, and responsibility later transferred to the Board for Texas State Hospitals and Special Schools in 1949. After its closure, the building later served as a facility for children with special needs. Today, the building is occupied by AGE of Central Texas, a non-profit organization that supports older adults and their caregivers. AGE of Central Texas erected this 2020 marker, which provides additional historical context for the site.
