The Bertram Building
historic place
The Bertram Building, located at 1601 Guadalupe Street in Austin, Texas, is a historic landmark. German immigrant Rudolph Bertram arrived in Austin in 1853. He erected this limestone structure by 1866. The building initially functioned as a general store, saloon, blacksmith shop, wagon yard, and small hotel. By 1880, Bertram ran a wholesale grocery and general store on the first floor, with family living quarters above. Rudolph Bertram was a prominent Austin businessman, also instrumental in the Austin and Northwestern Railroad. The town of Bertram, Texas, is named for him. Today, the Bertram Building is home to the Clay Pit restaurant. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. This building offers a tangible connection to Austin's early commercial and architectural past.
