The Brown Building, Austin, Texas

historic place

The Brown Building, a historic place in Austin, Travis County, was completed in 1938. Architects C.H. Page and Son designed this ten-story structure for businessman Herman Brown. Located at 710 Colorado Street, it exemplifies Art Moderne design with its flush piers and stylized granite entry. The interior features pink marble and a multi-colored terrazzo floor. Historically, the Brown Building housed Herman Brown's firm, Brown & Root, and the Texas Broadcasting Corporation. Notable figures like humorist Cactus Pryor and future governor John Connally worked here. Offices for U.S. Congressman Lyndon Baines Johnson were also located within. The building was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. It was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 2013. In the early 2000s, the Brown Building was converted into high-end lofts. This site reflects Austin's commercial and political past, and its Art Moderne architectural style.
