The Caldwell Treaty Oak Park
historical marker
The Caldwell Treaty Oak Park is in Austin, Travis County, Texas. This park features the historic Treaty Oak, a live oak estimated to be about 500 years old. It is the last remaining tree of the Council Oaks, a site where Native American tribes once met. Legends state Stephen F. Austin signed the first boundary agreement under its branches. The tree was once known as Raymond's Oak. The W.H. Caldwell family owned the land from 1882 until 1937. In 1937, the City of Austin purchased the property. A historical marker was erected in 1937, honoring the tree's significance. In 1927, the American Forestry Association recognized the Treaty Oak as a perfect specimen of a North American tree. This park preserves a significant natural landmark reflecting early Texas history.
