The Cisterns of the Texas State Capitol
historical marker
In Austin, Travis County, Texas, a historical marker notes the Cisterns. These two underground brick reservoirs stored rainwater for the Texas State Capitol. Rainwater collected from the Capitol's roof through gutters and pipes. A coal-fired steam pump in the basement distributed this water for drinking, sanitary needs, and fire protection. Even after an artesian well provided water in 1889, these cisterns supplied fresh water until a municipal system was available. This site illustrates an early water management solution for a significant Texas public building.
