Welcome to the French Legation, a historic place located in Austin, Travis County. This site offers a glimpse into the early diplomatic history of the Republic of Texas. The French Legation building was completed in 1841. It was erected for Conte Alphonse Dubois de Saligny, who served as the French chargé d'affaires to the Texas Republic, representing King Louis Philippe of France. Dubois de Saligny resided here from 1841 to 1842. The house itself was constructed of Bastrop pine, showcasing a Louisiana bayou architectural style. The legation's furnishings include several pieces that once belonged to Dubois de Saligny. In 1945, the State of Texas purchased this significant property. It was subsequently placed in the custody of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, who were responsible for its restoration and ongoing maintenance.
