The Goodman Building in Austin, Texas
historic place
The Goodman Building, a historic place in Austin's Travis County, was constructed between the mid-1880s and early 1890s. It was built for grocer Joseph Goodman, who operated his store on the main floor until 1924. From 1892 to 1896, the upper floor housed Jacob Bickler's German and English Academy, an elite preparatory school. This late Victorian-style building is recognized for its decorative brickwork and ornamental iron. Its historical significance was formally acknowledged when it was designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1969. The Goodman Building was then added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. Today, it continues to serve the community, housing state government offices and a local bar in its basement. The Goodman Building remains an example of Austin's early commercial and educational history.
