The Hilltop Gathering of Indigenous People
historical marker
In Austin, Travis County, a historical marker was erected in 2020 by the Texas Historical Commission. It commemorates "The Hilltop Gathering of Indigenous People." This specific hilltop, located where the French Legation now stands, served as a significant gathering place for Native Americans for thousands of years. Archaeological evidence indicates rigorous use during the Archaic period, possibly 5,000 years ago, with even older artifacts dating back as early as 9,000 years. Indigenous peoples were drawn to this site by a freshwater spring, offering good visibility and cool breezes. The area also provided abundant natural resources, including deer, fish, birds, nuts, tubers, and berries, supporting hunters and gatherers. At the time Austin was founded in 1839, the Tonkawa, Lipan Apache, and Comanche peoples ranged through this land. The marker acknowledges the enduring presence and long-term use of this site by Indigenous communities.
