The Littlefield House
historic place
Here in Austin is the historic Littlefield House. George W. Littlefield, a Civil War veteran, came to Texas in 1850. He served as a Major with Terry's Texas Rangers. Following the war, Littlefield became a cattleman, acquiring ranches in New Mexico and the Texas Panhandle. In 1883, he moved to Austin and began a career in banking. From 1911 to 1920, Littlefield served as a regent for the University of Texas. During this time, he contributed funds for new university buildings, study grants, and library collections. This Victorian residence was built for him in 1894, designed by architect James W. Wahrenberger. The house was bequeathed to the University of Texas in 1935 by his wife, Alice Littlefield. A historical marker for the Littlefield House was erected in 1962. This site reflects the legacy of George W. Littlefield and his significant impact on both Austin and the University of Texas.
