The Original Townsite of Montopolis

historical marker

The Original Townsite of Montopolis is recognized by a historical marker in Austin, Travis County, Texas. The Texas Historical Commission erected this marker in 2019. Jesse Cornelius Tannehill founded the original townsite. He began laying out Montopolis in early 1838. The platted town was officially established on July 2, 1839, on the north bank of the Colorado River. The name Montopolis combines the Latin "mont" for mountain and the Greek "polis" for city. This planned Republic of Texas settlement included lots for homes, farms, and public buildings. Evidence suggests Montopolis was considered as a potential capital for the Republic of Texas. However, Waterloo, which became Austin, was chosen instead. The Montopolis venture ended within two years. By 1841, the partnership dissolved, and the land was sold. This site is historically significant as an early, planned Republic of Texas town that predated Austin.
