The Roy-Hardin House, Austin, Texas

historic place

The Roy-Hardin House, also known as Millbrook, is a significant historic place in Austin, Texas. William Carroll 'Cal' Roy and Annie Stanley Roy purchased this Bouldin mill site in 1894. They then converted the property into their family home, where they raised their children. In 1939, Ernest Randolph Hardin and his wife, Maurine Underwood Hardin, acquired the house. Both drama professors, the Hardins undertook an eclectic restoration of the rubblestone structure. They incorporated architectural antiques, notably a floor salvaged from Austin's Driskill Hotel. During the 1940s, the Hardins added a weathervane marked 'Millbrook' to the carriage house, which ultimately gave the property its enduring name. The Texas Historical Commission officially designated the Roy-Hardin House as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1967. This site provides a tangible example of architectural adaptation and preservation efforts in Austin's history.
