The Shipe House

historical marker

The Shipe House is located in Austin, Travis County, Texas. This two-story home was completed in 1892 by Monroe Martin Shipe. Shipe developed Austin's Hyde Park suburb on the former state fairgrounds. He also brought innovative changes to the city, electrifying the streetcar system and introducing modern electricity. The house's construction notably used wood from the grandstands of the old State Fair of Texas. Its architectural style combines Stick style elements with Queen Anne decorations. A historical marker was erected by the Texas Historical Commission in 1982. This house represents Monroe Shipe's impact on Austin's early suburban growth.
