historical marker

The Whitley-Keltner House, located in Austin, Travis County, Texas, is recognized by a historical marker erected in 2017 by the Texas Historical Commission. This house was built circa 1894 by Sharp R. Whitley, Sr., who was the editor and proprietor of the People's Advocate Weekly newspaper. The house features an eclectic design, including an original third-story octagonal cupola. Around 1972 to 1973, salvaged Victorian components were added, contributing to its unique appearance. Many other features of the house date to the 1920s era. After Whitley, the house was owned for over ten years by Leroy R. Walden, who operated Walden's business college. From 1920 to 1970, the Adelia and James C. Keltner family resided here, and they likely rented rooms to university students and teachers. The Whitley-Keltner House is significant as a rare late 19th-century survivor of the early residential settlements in its area. It is designated as both an Austin Landmark and a Texas Historic Landmark. The historical marker highlights its importance in the architectural and communications history of Austin.
