In Austin, Travis County, stands the historic TMI Castle. This Victorian-style building was erected in 1870. It served as the headquarters for the Young Men's Preparatory School. This school was part of the Texas Military Institute, which moved to Austin in 1870 after its 1868 founding in Bastrop. The Institute owned the castle until its closure in 1880. From 1884 to 1887, Jacob Bickler's Texas German and English Academy occupied the TMI Castle. The Texas Historical Commission erected a marker here in 1962. TMI Castle is recognized as the oldest educational building still standing in Texas. It marks an important part of Austin's early educational landscape.
