University Interscholastic League
historical marker
In Austin, Travis County, a historical marker erected in 2009 by the Texas Historical Commission commemorates the University Interscholastic League. The University Interscholastic League, or UIL, was established by the University of Texas at Austin. Its origins trace back to 1910 with the formation of the Debating League of Texas High Schools. The Interscholastic Athletic Association was founded the following year, in 1911. These two organizations merged in Austin on May 3, 1913, to officially form the University Interscholastic League. The UIL's purpose is to provide educational extracurricular academic, athletic, and music contests for public primary and secondary schools across Texas. It organizes and supervises contests designed to prepare students for citizenship, emphasizing good sportsmanship and fair play. Today, the UIL is recognized as the largest organization of its kind in the world, providing opportunities for millions of students.
